I am assuming a multiplexed unit will consume less power than a constant current one.
incorrect. The average current to produce intensity n is the same both ways.

Secondly maxim has a huge selection of driver IC's for constant current displays. Which one should I use in case I went for that option?? I want one which allows scrolling text.
