Okay, what didn't work: crystal with a weird frequency (16.384M), several different combinations of the timer settings, and mildly wonky serial port monitoring software (which added another layer of false negatives). If I rounded, I could set the timer to 247, and get 9480 baud. If I pressed all the buttons in the right sequence, I would see whether or not anything was coming in. I just discovered this cute little behavior today.
What did work: standard crystal frequency, more easily predictable monitoring software, and double-checking the timer setting calculations. I think, more than anything else, the crystal did it. 9480 is within 2% of the desired; I think I've seen that quoted somewhere as a fair tolerance. Any theories or feedback? -Bob |
