#142938 - It's not so foolproof Responding to: ???'s previous message |

I don't think it's necessary to use the unbuffered parts, though they'd work too, I suppose. The manufacturers of 74HCMOS chips recommend to use the unbuffered inverters. Nevertheless, in any case I would use the built-in Pierce oscillator. This oscillator is ideal in many points: Lowest current consumption, sufficiently fast start-up time, lowest noise and lowest board area consume. These built-in oscillators are highly optimized for their job and shouldn't be replaced by an external oscillator. These series oscillators, which are built by the help of two inverters in series, are not so foolproof, Richard. I remember very well the days, when we worked with the Z80A, which needed a 4MHz clock. Only the 74LS04 worked satisfyingly here. For the grafic card we needed to use the 7404 (at 14MHz). The 74S04 didn't work at all. Also, for reliable results we had to use chips from Texas Instruments only. Kai |
