You would be surprised how many areas of the industry are dependent on EPROMs. They are seen as superior to FLASH in places where no data loss, hard or soft (e.g. because of radiation) is allowed. In microcontrollers, they are also cheaper than FLASH and provide the middle way in cost between maskROM and FLASH (as OTP) - look for example at Atmels offering of '51s. They also offer lower power consumption while running than the FLASH counterparts, that's an another niche where they are applied. JW |
