In an application using this kind of signal, we had an ECU with a tachometer input. A digital capture input of a C167 with a little circuitry for the hardware acquisition.

The software had to measure the period to determine the speed.
The speed value was next filtered qnd broadcasted on the CAN.

As available in the ECU, it was also used for specific strategies like speed control, speed limitation, security functions, ...


An example was to avoid a relay to be opened when speed was above a defined threshold.
In this case, a comparator with an hysteresis was coded in the ECU. Do not forget the hysteresis....


Other strategy was the speed limit where a regulator using something like PI corrector was implemented.
