If the customer can be dissuaded from requiring 6.5 kW of incandescant lamps, the Maxim drivers are indeed a beautiful solution.
I wonder how much light they're expecting? I think it's valid to compare wall areas; so a 2 foot square room with 2W would be about as bright as a 20 foot square room with 200W of lamps. If a room is more like 6 inches square, then I'm guessing that equal brightness would need 125 mW (incandescant). I'll bet you can get almost that much light from a 20 mA LED. The cost of LEDs might kill it; the lowest I see for bright white LEDs is about $1; but 2W incandescant lamps are more like $0.04. The power and drivers for LEDs will be about $0.10 while the incandescant lamps will cost about $0.80 to light. (Just my swag). The power savings could sell the LEDs. LEDs would reduce the power from 6.5 kW to more like 300W (5V @ 60A). |
