There's nothing wrong with this circuit! Ok, it has no Schmitt-trigger input, but this really doesn't matter if the baud rate isn't too high, and if this reciever is driven by a proper RS232 driver.

Please don't forget, that most RS232 recievers do violate the old RS232 standards either! If you have a look at datasheet of MAX232E, for instance, you will see the following:

Input Threshold Low: +0.8V min, +1.2V typ
Input Threshold High: +1.7V typ, +2.4V max

So, please keep cool. This is a circuit, that will properly work at low baud rates! Nevertheless I would use a special RS232 transciever.
