I don't think it is too complicated - at least from the datasheet it seems quite simple. Of course it has a lot of functions and there will be certainly problems to get everything working; but I would start simply connecting a 51 and memory and perhaps the analog (phone and speakerphone) peripherals as indicated, powering up, some trivial simple serial-to-parallel sw into the '51, the favourite terminal program and start playing with it, command-by-command...

Am I too naive?
