for 3V3 outputs to 5V : the input parametres of 74HCT are an eaxt match to 3v3 logic and the outputs are 5V logic. Or use the 74LVC4245
For 5V inputs to 3V3 : use the 74LVC4245
For 5V bidirectional to 3V3 : use the 74LVC4245

Again this produces rock solid level conversion. If you can live with reduced noise margins, by all means, use the Mickey-Mouse solutions.
