I once tried overclocking an AT89C2051-24PC (Max Frequency = 24MHz) two ways:

1.) Discrete HC-49 xtal with 22pf caps at 32MHz - failed to oscillate at rated xtal frequency and ran at sub-harmonic instead (10.67 MHz!).

2.) External crystal oscillator module at 32MHz - Worked at this speed BUT program result sometimes 'departed' from that expected where the MCU is run within specified limits.
