B & B electronics have an appnote (I have it as a booklet) which should be on their website (which is currently down) which, while discussing the B & B 232 to 485 converters also is very informative re cables attenuation, impedance etc. This appnote has a lot of other good info. For instance they have 'the formula' for when you can get by without termination (I would never do that) which in that way becomes very informative as to why termination is required.
