I never tried to "operate" it with any or both of the transils/transzorbs/call-them-what-you-or-the-manufacturers'-marketing-want "fired"... To be absolutely honest, it even did not occur to me to try... However, 485 tends to work - although "weirdly" - in many pathological ways, including one of the nodes floating, shorted to ground and similar; so it may work under overvoltage/protection-kicked-in conditions, just, ehm, I wouldn't recommend it as a standard mode of operation...
