I don't doubt that; but in this context, we are already almost sure the bootvector is lost; my point is, I don't know if with RC reset it can start transmitting spontaneously even if there is no application; with proper reset if it starts transmit spontaneously it's 100% not empty (erased=all FFs).

Hoooooops sorry this is RC2 not RD2, OK I don't know what will that do (RD2 when erased, runs through 56k FF (= mov r7,a) and goes into bootloader regardless of bootvector).
