Try convincing your client for whom you built 5 boards a decade ago that you need him to spend another $20K (inflation!) just to keep his machines fashionably updated. You'll find out why he keeps that piece of pipe next to his desk.
That is why you keep a copy of all relevant datasheets in the project file. It is sooooo easy to blame the chip manufacturers for deleting obsolete datasheets, when the fault is your own in not saving datasheets in the project file. Yeah, yeah "I have to fix this stuff designed by someone else" and so what? if that "someone else" did not save the datsheets in the project file, is that your fault? There is an ever ongoing push for the semiconductor manufacturers to keep old mdatasheets available, it is not going to happe, so accept reality and save the datasheets in the project file.
