In the context of THIS thread, where one can choose what the application is, I have to admit that your statement is correct, and mine is an overstatement.

My view is from the general case, where the 3-wire interface doesn't necessarily work, since you don't necessarily have the option of disabling/bypassing the hardware handshake.
