I looked at the FAQ. I don't see why it's so hard to just have one pin that you send high or low to gain raw access to the memory. (Jeez ~:\ )

OK, let's say the middle group (89C51RD2-family, ADuC8xx, DS89C4x0, high-end P89LPC9xx) is the one to go with. Being a purist, I would prefer to at least THEORETICALLY be able to program the chip without a computer, but that doesn't seem possible as yet.

The FAQ mentions that the serial hardware can be present on the chip. Let's assume that I can access my PC's ports with PERL. What, if any, serious hardware is there between the chip and the PC? How do you initiate programming?
