#145779 - More than just a level converter! Responding to: ???'s previous message |
I don't think it's that uncommon to call it a "level converter" or "level translator" - but "transceiver" is certainly a more accurate term!
A true RS232 transceiver does more than just translate the voltage levels - it also ensures that the signal meets all the other RS232 requirements for slew-rate, impedance, short-circuit toleration, etc, etc... Proper RS232 transceiver chips like the MAX232 et al will also give you ESD protection, and other goodies. The term "level translator" is probably best reserved for those nasty bodges that really do only provide (some) level translation - rather than proper RS232 compliance... |
