The formula to calculate the current through the LED does not take into account the drop across the LED. This is 1.8V for a red and 2.1V for a green LED, so you can't just dismiss it. I would like to add the availability of low current LEDs, like the Agilent HLMP-17xx, which I use almost exclusively. At 3mA they are already as bright as most 'standard' LEDs!
