This gets round several objections

1.) The load is off at reset.

2.) The supply to the load can be as high as practical (with a flywheel diode this works with relays too)That means it can feed several LEDs in series.

3.) The first transistor can be driven from +5 and the second from +12, and provides a little more isolation to the CPU.
