I think one reason the PIC16C/F84 is popular, is that you can make a programmer for it using four resistors and two diodes (or something like that...). A programmer for the AT89Cx051 is a lot more complicated to make and "expensive" to buy as a kit. I think hobbyists would rather spend $5 on a PIC programmer than $50 or more on a 8051 programmer.

If there were 8051 chips that were that easy to programme I think that would help. Are there any?

Why dont we start something like converting every application available out there for PIC to 8051.
