I think the PIC chips (16c84) etc came popular due to hacking of UK Sky TV, goldcards etc. Playstation and PS2 - try to fit a 8052 into a Playstation. But remember what the P.I.C. stands for(!). OK for small stuff but when it comes to real computing well thats the 80xx series for you.
