Strictly, the term "serial port" just means any port that handles data in a bit-serial manner; eg, RS232, USB, I2C, SPI, Microwire, etc, etc.
However, many people use the term with some implied specific meaning; eg, a "Serial Port" on a PC is usually assumed to mean an asynchronous RS232 port (note: that's not a tautology). Note that the "Serial Port" on an 8051 has both synchronous (shift-register) & asynchronous (UART) modes. |
