hi,
probably this message is some offtopic but I just wish to say that there is well known Open Systems Interconnect model (OSI) described with International Standards Organization (ISO). According it, any networking system divided into sevel layers. I do not know what you name "protocol", "module", "component" etc. Just look at OSI-model description if you need determine what is UART and what is SPI.
