Should we ask Craig to change all the words "UART" on the forum to the "RS232C protocol" ... No, of course not - and that's not what I said. If they are actually talking about the hardware (or software) Component, then it is correct to call it a UART - and, in most cases on this forum, this is the way the term is used. But If they say, "the UART is an asynchronous protocol" - that is not correct. Again, A UART is a Component (whether hardware or software) that implements a protocol (albeit only a very low-level one); a UART itself is not a protocol. SPI, on the other hand, is a protocol. Think of it this way: you can go to your favourite electronics shop and buy a UART; you cannot buy "an SPI" |
