#84020 - Tsunami the swift eliminator Responding to: ???'s previous message |
but you can do something about after the ocean bed has shaken from a tremor and the tsunami is just impending....... Some facts as I understand about this damned tsunami : - While it is true that you can sense the tsunami, telling which coast it will wreak havoc needs extensive modelling and computations. And this needs to be done after it is created and has started to move. - I am told it travels at speeds of a modern jet - 500 to 800kmph+. Hence the time available for a public disaster warning is quite limited and also depends on what time of day it is. Maybe if its prime time on TV , then a flash warning will help people run for cover. But what about the fisher folk already in the sea but close to the coast - where is the cover for them ? - Sighting and running to safety is futile. The line of sight on a seashore might extend to about say 5km on a clear day. Assuming that you are looking there and spot the tsunami, and assuming it is travelling at 500kmph, you get about 38 seconds to run for cover. Enough ? And to complicate things, the height shows up only when it reaches the shore. No. Whichever way you look at it, this tsunami is a born killer. And after what happened, I wonder if I will ever be at peace as long as I am in a seashore. The happy evenings in the famed Marina beach here is history now. Raghu |
