Do you really need a silkscreen and/or soldermask on a one-up prototype? Absolutely. Everything I do uses SMT parts, and of course you really need a mask when soldering these things, even when soldering by hand. Just imagine trying to solder a small QFP to a board where you've got a top-side ground pour without a mask! And I don't think I'd enjoy building up a board with more than a dozen components without a silkscreen. You'd need to have a blown-up assembly drawing on your bench in front of you and you'll constantly be looking up and down between the work and the drawing. The last handbuilt proto I did had easily 100 0805 resistors and probably another 100 0805 caps. I suppose this all comes under the umbrella of "you get what you pay for." -a |
