Actually, the X2 pin on most 80C51 devices can sink 10mA. It is the output of an inverter. The thing to keep in mind is that the X1 input of a '51 has a VIH of typically 0.7VDD. If the "downstream" part is a '51 family part, you might need to use an open-drain buffer with an external pullup to VDD to get that VIH drive. Done this for many years.
