If you are going to make the leap to a new design then 16 bit seems a bit of a waste of time, to make a new design slightly more future proof then 32 bit is what would be needed.The XA isnt exactly super popular because if you need more power than a 8052 16 bit doesnt seem to get much consideration.
But then if you look at all the 32 bit processors there are lots about and many of them have a lot more instructions aimed at higher level programming.Its a difficult call several man years of development work for a product which probably wouldnt sell very well isnt exactly what the manufacturers are looking for at the moment.
