The selection of 8051 tools is quite nice; I have to admit that. I don't think, however, that the multisource nature of the 8051 directly created this situation. All you need is access to the instruction set for third party tools to be made.
Name ONE microcontroller that is not multisource where you have many choices in tools. The competiveness of '51 tools force the toolmakers to be ultra responsive to bug reports. I recall one instance with a bug in a proprietary tool "the bug yoou reported will be fixed in our next release out next Jamuary". Erik |
