#92106 - Yes, multisource is good

Sure, if you use a F120 and SILabs pull the plug, you are screwed BUT

And more generally, the futher your device deviates from the "classic" device for the family in question, mostly in terms of added features you rely on, the harder things will be for you if the plug is pulled.

If you ever have worked with a chipmakers "proprietary" tools you REALLY get to appreciate multisource. Had the '51 not been multisourced we would not have had Keil, Raisonance, HiTech, SDCC, IAR etc to choose from.

The selection of 8051 tools is quite nice; I have to admit that. I don't think, however, that the multisource nature of the 8051 directly created this situation. All you need is access to the instruction set for third party tools to be made. BUT, I think part of the MCS-51/52 architecture's dominance is owed to the fact that it is multisource, and that dominance gets toolmakers excited because it means a larger market for their products.

Multisource gives us an environment where competition keep the toolmakesrs on their toes.

True, and makes it a grueling job to be a toolmaker. How many device specific headers does Keil include these days? How many different implementations of multiple data pointers do their library routines have to support?

so HIP HIP HORRAY for multisource

Erik

I certainly cannot argue that one. In the end, multisource is a great thing. But, it's also an illusion to those who think it is provides perfect protection against the discontinuation of a part.
