embedded systems(more specifically 8051 family)
A cellphone with an ARM (and a leg:)) and 8Mbyte of memory is, indeed, an "embedded system" and just asking universities about "embedded systems" they may very well say yes on that premise. There is an immense gap between "small embedded technology" and "large embedded technology". If your interest is in "small embedded" make sure that is what you get into.
