Sorry about this. I started writing and got carried away =/ It's a bit long! I'm glad to hear that, Carry on, please. Tomas Stein said:
Basically you live with 2 or 3 other students, which has it's benefits. You wouldn't be living in high-style That's the kind of life I like and am used to. Wine, roses and drunken friends is all I need. And enough pdf in a day. Tomas Stein said:
Other Assistance - DeVry is extreamly good about helping you enroll and get everything setup to live here. They will go out of their way to find you room and board that is acceptable, work out financing, and anything in between. Well, it's all good, but how 8051-oriented are they? Is it probable that they offer some A.Sc? I don't want a four-year course. Tomas Stein said:
Texas Instruments, but thats only scratching the surface of whats around here in the Dallas area. Basically, we have been taken over by Telecom companies (all of which hire embedded programmers). Almost every single major telecom company is here. Lokheed Martin and Raytheon if your into military embedded. There is a few big medical device companies. Not to mention everything inbetween. IMO, DallasAustin is the second largest hotbed of embedded development in the US (second to CA). Anyway, there are hundreds of big name companies if thats your thing. Tons of small companies as well. . DeVry Institute of Technology Irving is the nearest DeVry to Dallas I found in Encarta. Any DeVry in Dallas? It's of great importance to me to determine the target country/region/univ. first. The target region is now somehow clear now: Dallas, TX And the candidate target colleges, Let's see what we have... . Dallas, TX Capmus . University of Texas at Dallas . Dallas Baptist University ;) . Paul Quinn College . Southern Methodist University . The Criswell College comments? Tomas Stein said:
Credit Transfer - I don't know if it's possible, but you might be able to transfer somemost of your education credits so that you don't need to re-take some of the more general courses. No need. A 2-year study is not a big deal. Moreover my Napoleonic scores and this stupid-o-cracy oriented educational atmosphere here *sigh* is not worth their spit. Tomas Stein said:
8051 Curriculum - Devry (speaking of all campuses) in general may or may not specifically offer 8051. I think Jon mentioned below that the Kansas City branch did Zilog. But DO understand that Devry's 8051 coverage is a small fraction of the classes you would take. To put it in perspective, you might have 2 courses out of 100 that covered 8051. You might have 6 out of 100 that would cover assemblyC. Sad news. I'm 30. Don't have enough time for a diverse set of courses. Reading Any unrelated stuff that can be postponned to when it migh come handy makes me sick. Tomas Stein said:
If you are only looking for 8051 study, I don't believe there is a single school that offers a direct approach at 8051 or embedded as a whole. More sad news. You know, I'd rather study/practice the core idea+knowledge of 8051 to death. Then when I need to design a whaterer-the-hell system I can study the specific needed stuff. Many courses they teach us in the univ. are actually a financial aid to proffessors/staff and a waste of time for students. The idea is: If I am an engineer then I do have the ability to learn any needed new thing. That's the spirit of engineering. So we needn't learn unnecessary stuff. Tomas Stein said:
All seem to cover the broad spectrum of electronics as well as some general studies (economics, calculus, etc). A shame for the humanity! Tomas Stein said:
2) I realize that school is a way to get around imigration rules and whatnot, but as far as education goes, my personal oppinion is that a dedicated person that has good electronics background who knows a little about 8051embedded can get a better "8051 education" by attending embedded workshops, reading materialbooks, getting real world experience. Just FYI. Very much true. The school approach serves some purposes for me: . A 'cover' if you like to immigrate . A cut to the landing expenses . A save to brain/legwork consummed for real estate/food/... . A refresh for elec. stuff (As Jack Ganssle? said my mind is quite similar to DRAMs in that it's to be refreshed every some nano seconds) . A return/rebirth to the fantastic college/dorm ambiance. Tomas Stein said:
And I would deffinatly recommend Dallas not only because of the 8051 coverage, but because the jobcompany situation here is really good. That's it, Dallas. Period. This second post of yours Tomas, was incredible. Openned new horizons to me. The 'latest version' of my target: A short term (A.Sc. probabely) "best bet for 8051 study" univ./college not-expensive(~10k max.) course 'room&board' included in Dallas wich apparently gives time/access to a half-time 8051 job. |
