Do you seriously believe that async NRZ with its two or more wasted bits per byte is the ONLY way to communicate?

Why do you suppose Ethernet doesn't use that format? Why do you suppose IBM's protocols don't use it? Why do you think the telecom industry doesn't use it except for ultra-low-speed human interfaces?
