He's also got to take your outline (excellent as it is) and turn it into a fully-detailed hardware design; he's got to build the hardware; he's got to test it all, etc, etc.

It's certainly a whole lot more that just "a couple of days or so" of programming!
A week is probably more like it.

I don't know how a week (or even 2 days) of Ravi's time relates to the cost of 10 USB-Serial ports in his area, but it certainly wouldn't be economic for me!
