... but wiring 4 relays and 4 diodes onto a protoboard is not so much time compared to time needed for wiring up the relay output to be connected across the pushbuttons, which has to be done anyway.
General '51 boards with 40pin socket, power, reset and 232 are laying around in piles :-) (and this configuration can be wired up onto a protoboard within minutes too). More, making a (why not single-sided) PCB for this configuration is a matter of perhaps hours, if one is equipped for this kind of work. Soldering the parts... minutes, literally. Btw., what is the cost of 1 PLC including the development environment? (Sure it makes difference if one lays on your desk already). Stressing again, not pro, but certainly would do the job.
