#86693 - Language - doubt
Responding to: ???'s previous message

3). Language barriers. For a lot of users here, English is not their native language and I can imagine it makes life pretty difficult if, in addition to struggling to make sense of a foreign language, you also have to struggle to make sense of some verrrry cryptic abbreviations.

Well, that's what I'd have thought too, eg:
  • to uderstand 'u' as an abbreviation for "you" requires that u (sic) not only understand the English word "you", but also that 'u' sounds like "you" in English;
  • "EZ" as an abbreviation for "easy" only works if you are American, and say 'Z' as "zee" (Brits say, "Zed")

    In spite of this, though, it seems to be non-native English speakers that are the worst for using SMS on this forum!
  • Is this the way that English is learned as a foreign language these days?
  • Is it just a way to avoid the bizarre English spelling rules (especially if English is not your 1st language, and you're faced with both British and American variants!)
