There is one reason for disallowing SMS on the forum which no one has mentioned yet. Disallowing abbreviations makes the archive more easily searchable. You don't have to try and guess how others might or might not have abbreviated the word you're looking for. This is also why, when you do use professionally accepted abbreviations you should define them upon first use. It makes the text clearer and it gives the search engine a real word to find. Finally, in some cases the abbreviation is considered the real word. For example, no one will go into their local electronics parts house and ask for a light emitting diode or an electrically erasable programmable read only memory chip or a dual in-line memory module. They will ask for an LED, an EEPROM chip or a DIMM of whatever capacity they desire. Thus, in these cases there is no need to define the abbreviation first.

All of this notwithstanding, don't discount what others have said about using SMS in your posts. This is a professional forum, not a chat room. You should represent yourself accordingly.
