"Just because a software package is an old version does that make it legal to promote its use without license?"
Maybe not, but consider this scenario: Software company X sells an OS for many years. Your company Y depelops a lot of software that runs on that OS. This software is not a profit centre in itself, but is a vital component in a large system. One day, company X stops selling the OS. Your company would happily pay 10 times what they have been paying for each copy, but company X couldn't give a ****. They refuse to sell any more copies. Redevelopment of the software is the only option, but it was all written years ago by 'clever' programmers who are long gone. Redevelopment is the only option but the time required will kill the company. What would you do then? |
