The problem is that creating maintainable code is costly - in means of time, effort etc.
Yes, but extremely cheap compared to the cost of "repairing" any other type of code. Also maintainable code make the customer state "they fixed it in one day, Im impressed" instaead of "I were down for sevral weeks, I'm never going to buy from them again".
