Oh, well, I would read that as "serving the same purpose". But that doesn't make much sense since you're ignoring the quality and completeness of Keil compared to that of SDCC. People go with Keil not because the code isn't available, but because it's a better product. If SDCC and Keil were identical and cost the same, I couldn't see any reason to not use SDCC. Craig: since opening up the source code would make their package available to some non-zero number of leeches that want a professional compiler for free.
Erik: my point exactly Was that your point? Hey, I have no problem admitting that the ideals of open source often conflict with the need to make money. It's something I struggle with frequently. But, in the end, if the price is exactly the same and the product is exactly the same, the customer would be crazy to opt for a closed-source approach.
