Lesson number one, dear Adam: Insist on taking the right material when working with electronics! There's no excuse for taking the wrong parts! If you cannot get the rigth parts, stop doing in electronics, because you will never get anything reliable or have success which lasts much longer than for the moment!

Get the "AT 89 ISP TOOL" also called "ATMEL's ISP cable", download the ATMELISP software and start a happy new life of being able to handle your microcontroller properly.
