If your two NPN's are connected as a diff-amp, with one base conected to +3, derived from Vcc and Gnd, then you might "get by" with the assumption that if it's not above the +3, it must be below -3, since states in between aren't valid. One of the collectors will provide the necessary inversion, too.

Now, I wouldn't want to operate on that basis, given that there are better solutions available, but one could consider it.
