You won't be beating up on some hapless innocent who just made the mistake of asking a question about which you have more than one opinion.

(a) you haven't corrected me.

(b) you have yet to show where the negative supply you insist on has a role in receiving RS232 signals, let alone impvoing noise margins.

(c) you've already stated in your own words that you can't produce any support for your notion that using a negative supply increases noise margins, and, in fact, I've invited you to show a specification of any sort that indicates that even the MAX devices use their negative supply for that purpose. I haven't found it yet but I believe I have an app-note that indicates MAX-232 only uses the negative supply in the transmitter section.
