There's also the 8-pin TI 75155, which has one transmitter and one receiver. There's no need to bother with all the passives.

This all started with some joker actually "bothering with all the passives" but not "bothering with the standard". http://www.8052.com/forum/read.phtml?id=115584 I think Oleg posted in response to those that states that no RS232 transciever is available at their location (which sounds VERY strange).
