You've already agreed you can't verify that the presence of the negative supply does anything for the receiver.

I never said that, what I said was "if the dead band is +3/-3 as opposed to +3/gnd you have a better noise immunity"

The presence of the negative supply is irrelevant if it is not used to make the threshold for 'low' -3 instead of ground.

After all, the negative supply doesn't help detect whether the incoming signal is above or below +3 volts, does it?
of course not, BUT it will eliminate the "detection of noise to ground" since the requirement would be -3 for the output to change.

I really do not see where you are gong with this, it seems you totally ignore that a well designed interface chip will have hysteresis and thus a dead band.
