the only way you can really tell is by detailed analysis of the pipeline structure and the only way i can see you doing that is with a nbehavioual model which they are not likely to supply.the only studies Ive seen are based on general discussions of the effects of pipelines lengths on things like what happens when there is a pipeline stall due to instruction branching and so on.as i am sure you are aware very deep pipelines have a big penalty when it comes to pipeline flushing unless they use exotic architectures like instruction re-ordering,branch prediction and so on.The thing with exotic architectures is you need compilers which are aware of them. |
