Obviously, with an 8032, he must mean a programmed ROM chip - as you say.

The only thing that your suggestion will do is to make the O/P's hardware useless.

Since he titled his post, "giving up the ghost", I assumed that he did consider his wardware useless and was abandoning it - that's what "giving up the ghost" usually suggests!
