This sounds like a reasonable approach. You talked about an office machine, so use a connector that is uncommon in this environment. Female DB15 sounds OK. I would advise using RS232. TTL can be problematic unless your interface cable is very short and you have very good ground continuity between the two pieces of equipment.
We build equipment for rail transit vehicles. The North American rail transit industry has a defacto standard PTE (Portable Test Equipment) interface. This uses a very specific military circular connector, and no other connectors for other purposes are allowed to be the same size and pin configuration. This connector has DC power, RS232 (usually isolated), and some other pins that can be application specific. I wouldn't suggest a $100 connector for your application, but the basic idea is the same. Don't document that the connector even exists. If people don't know what use the connector has then they will have no incentive to play with it. The vast majority of people will simply ignore it. In the end, if someone really wants to screw around with it then you can't help that. |
