The LT1785/LT1791 from linear technology http://www.linear.com/pc/produc...1017,P1713 can, in adiition to surges, withstand a constant + or - 60 volts on the A and B in/outputs.
These chips can take a lot of abuse. You will, of course have to accept 485 in your "service box" but I doubt you will make enough of those to make them cost sensitive. A trick re supplying power: supply a higher voltahe fed through a resistor to the connector. then use a 7905 type in the service box. Erik |
