#95622 - Power Line Channel
Good day,

I have my very first work hooray!!, which consists in sending very simple commands trough a 240VAC @ 60 Hz Power Line for street lighting (2 Km). Only the lights are connected in the transformer

I took a look on X10, but i'm affraid the Power Line will attenuate too greatly a signal like the 120KHz from the X10 and installing x10 repeaters is not an economical option and the system needs to be reliable. I read there may be attenuations of 50db or more

I searched here and found the NE5050 and the one from National Instruments, they both sounded good but they are obsolete :( . Now, i think Echelon's PL3150 can be used for communications for 2Km

What was your experience over distance communications? i can live with waaaaaay low communications baudrate (even 1 byte/sec ;) the purposse is to stablish a link for 2Km (there may be around 50 devices but i would broadcast the command)

By the way, the PL3150 can cost $10 USD in volume discounts and i believe the think can beat the 2Km from what i read in the Recommended Coupling Circuit Schematics

page 133, example 13

The bottom line:
Should i go out for a quest and try to make my own PLC? i was thinking in using a 10KHz carrier instead of the 120KHz (it may have less attenuation), make something like X10, amplify the thing with lots of gain and try to recover the data (with the help of an 8051 of course). I was considering also to use 2 carriers like PL3150 and make the think a little redundant
Now, i don't know how reliable this would be and if it can be cost effective.

P.S. : i will be very very very careful
